Dear Parents,

 I hope you and your family are well. 

IRD Duhallow Schools’ Folklore Project:  On 6th October 6th class recorded   a programme with Radio Kerry along with  five other schools  as part of the  School’s Folklore Project. The children enjoyed discussing and reading excerpts from  essays written by local children in 1938 and their own projects. We will let you know when this programme will be aired and when the CD is launched.

Earth Week: The Dioceses of Kerry recently celebrated Earth Week. In conjunction with Earth week and with Ms. O’Connell’s help 4th and 5th class produced a project.  This project is on display in the Cathedral.  These pupils also spoke about their project  to Mary Fagan from Kerry Radio and will  feature on her Horizons Programme due to be aired Sunday next 20th October at 9.00a.m.

Well done to everyone.

Annual debate:  The annual 6th Class Debate will take place on Thursday 17th October @1.45p.m. in the Assembly Hall.  All are welcome.

Hallow  E’en  Dress up:  Junior and Senior Infants 1st 2nd and 3rd  classes  are invited to dress up in their Hallow E’en costumes on Friday 25TH  October    Please ensure all children are warm enough in their costumes  for break times and that they can move safely.   No implements or sharp objects for safety reasons.

Parents as Volunteers:  We welcome the help of parents e.g. helping to supervise swimming lessons after Christmas.  Garda Vetting of volunteers is now a requirement of schools.  If you are willing to be Garda vetted to help out with school activities as they arise please contact the secretary for a form. If you are already vetted and are willing to help please let us know also. Thank you to those parents who have been vetted and are now available to help.

Volunteers for cleaning:  We are currently looking for volunteers to help clean the school  for 6 days when Seán Kelliher our caretaker is going on holidays.  The dates are Thursday 24th October and Friday 25th, October, Monday 4th November, Tuesday 5th, Wednesday 6th November and Thursday 7th November.  If you are available on these dates please contact Ilona Flaherty on 087.6314145 and a rota can be arranged. A big thank you Ilona and everyone involved.

Christmas Shoe Box Appeal. Team Hope: This year we will be participating in Team Hope.  If you would like to participate in this worthy charity please read the leaflet.  The organisers have asked us to mention that it is not suitable to include chocolate in the boxes.  The boxes will be collected from the school on Monday 11th November only.  Please bring in your boxes to the school on or before that date. Additional leaflets are available in the school office.

 Christmas Cards: The school with the help of Elaine Clifford  is organising the Christmas Card fundraiser for the school again this year.  Each child will design their own personal Christmas Card and receive a sample card to show at home before there is any obligation to buy.  If you are interested in finding out more please check on www.christmas cardsforschools.ie.  Please don’t buy your Christmas cards until you see your child’s masterpiece.  Pre-Fab:  We intend to replace the pre-fab as it is dangerous with a garden shed for storage.  The cost involved in purchasing this shed is €4700. The shed will be somewhat smaller.  We will be extending the play area for the infants. We are very grateful to Mike Lucey  Board of Management for overseeing this project. Mike will need help in November to move furniture from pre-fab before it is removed. Mike can be contacted on 087.6794243 if you are available to help.

Parent Teacher Meetings: The parent teacher meetings will take place on Friday 15th November from 3.00p.m. to  5.30p.m.    The meetings will take place in the Assembly Hall. 

  Children will go home at 2.30p.m. The school cannot accept responsibility for children on the school premises during the meetings. Please make an arrangement to have your children looked after.

Midterm Break: School will close on Friday 25th October and will reopen Monday 4th November.

 Confirmation: The Sacrament of Confirmation for pupils of Scoil Bhríde, Loreto will take place on Thursday 7th March 2014 in St. Mary’s Cathedral.

1st Holy Communion: The sacrament of 1st Holy Communion  for pupils of Scoil Bhríde, Loreto,will take place in the Church of the Holy Spirit, Muckross on Saturday 24th May 2014.

 Parents’ Association AGM: Parents’ Association will be having their annual general meeting shortly and notification of same will be given to parents.  They do great work for the school and all parents are encouraged  to come.
