Newsletter 22nd September 2014

22nd September 2014
Dear Parents,
I hope you and your family had an enjoyable summer break. Welcome back everyone. A special welcome to our new junior infants and all other pupils who joined the school.
Raffle: Sincere thanks to all who sold raffle tickets. A great effort was put in by everybody. The final figure collected was €2500. This money will be used to finish the running track. A big thank you to the Parents’ Association for their help with the raffle. The winner of the two All Ireland Tickets was Patricia O’Donoghue and Niamh and Muiris O’Donoghue were the sellers.
Congratulations to the Kerry Minor and Senior teams and particularly our past pupil Fionn Fitzgerald, whose mother Kathleen serves on our Board of Management.
School improvements: A number of developments took place in the school over the summer. The pre-fab has been removed and that area has been turned into an “almost” all weather grass pitch. We have also dug out a running track around the small pitch. We have added a layer of stones and will top this with wood chip.(we are waiting patiently for this wood chip to be delivered.) We also made a small school garden with a few beds – one for each classroom. Unfortunately we also had a major leak in the school during the summer and part of the ceiling came down in the hall and in classroom 1. Thankfully all was sorted before the 1st September and our insurance will cover repairs. Thank you to Risteard Ó Lionáird who provided advice the Engineer’s Report, Páraic O’Donoghue who checked out the electrics and our own Seán Kelliher who was always available helpful, courteous and wise. Above all I would like to thank Mike Lucey (Board of Management) who worked tirelessly over the Summer for the school to ensure these projects were completed and the repairs done before September1st.
Climb of Torc Mountain: 3rd, 4th 5th and 6th classes had a very enjoyable day climbing Torc Mountain on September 12th. A big thank you to the parents who accompanied us.
Board of Management meeting: Our first Board of Management of the new school term will take place on Wednesday 1st October.
Retirement: After almost fourteen years of service our dedicated caretaker Sean is retiring the end of October. We are hugely indebted to Sean for his conscientious work with the school and he will be sorely missed. The Board of Management, Parents’ Association and the children will make presentations to Seán about 2.15p.m. on Friday 24th October. All are welcome.
Mass for Loreto N.S and Loughquittance N.S. in Muckross Church: As part of the Parish Mission Redemptorist Priest Fr. Seamus will celebrate mass on Monday 20th October at 1.30p.m. Loreto N.S and Loughquittane will attend. Infants can go home at 12.30p.m. We would appreciate lifts to Muckross Church for children from 1st to 6th class at 1.00p.m. All Parents are welcome to come to the mass. Junior and Senior Infants are also very welcome to come to mass with their parents. Please collect the children after mass at approx 2.30p.m. to go home.
School Contribution Reminder: Thank you to all the parents who have paid their annual school contribution and a gentle reminder to those who have not yet paid. The Book Rental Scheme is included in the school contribution. The school purchased a large quantity of books this year for the scheme which has resulted in a huge savings for parents. Please make sure books are covered as we hope they will last many years.
The annual contribution covers:
• Book Rental
• Art and Crafts ( Allocation will be given to class teacher)
• Standardised Tests @€3.80 per pupil
• Insurance @ €8 per pupil
• Photocopying and maintenance of photocopiers
• I.T. Maintenance
The contribution is :
• €75.00 for one pupil
• €140.00 for two pupils
• €200 for three Pupils
• €250 for four pupils.

The above contribution may be paid in two equal installments. The oldest member of the family may give the money in a sealed envelope to their class teacher or our secretary. If parents would like to pay through their bank in installments. standing order forms with the school bank details are available in the office.
In these tough times we are aware that any contribution may be difficult for some families. Please let the principal know in the strictest confidence if paying is a problem.
Pupil Personal Accident Insurance: Pupil personal Accident Insurance will be paid for each pupil in the school. The cost of this is included in the annual contribution.
Child Attendance: Under recent legislation- The Education Welfare Act, parents have a number of obligations in relation to child attendance. All schools are obliged to report to the Education Welfare Officer (EWO) if a child is absent 20 days or more in a year. The parents in such a situation are then contacted by the Education Welfare Officer. Failure to explain the reason for absence will result in the category of “unexplained “ being forwarded to the Education Welfare Officer. Junior and Senior Infants have got explanation of absence notes which they need to complete if their child is absent. Classes from 1st to 6th have been given Homework Diaries and absence notes can be completed at the back of these diaries.
Football : Training has recommenced with Vince Cooper. Training will be every second Monday. Senior classes ( 3rd to 6th ) are getting the opportunity now – junior classes can look forward to their turn soon. Our senior team are travelling to Farranfore on Thursday to take part in the Cumann na mBunscoil East Kerry blitz.
Hurling: Hurling training with Pat Healy will be on Wednesday for the whole school.
Aquatics: Aquatics is now part of the Curriculum for Primary Schools. We will be continuing with six sessions each in the Aquila Club, Gleneagle Hotel for 3rd 4th 5th and 6th classes after Christmas.

Recycling: Irish Clothing Collections are having a new and used clothing collection in the school on the 2nd October. The school will receive €7 per 10kg bag of clothes. Mobile phone are also collected. Items collected include new and used men’s women’s and children’s clothing, shoes, belts, handbags, ties, linens, household textiles etc. Please place goods for recycling in a black bag and leave in the school assembly hall. Please keep mobile phones separate.
School Calendar: Attached is our school calendar.
School Rules: I enclose a copy of our school rules. Compliance with the school uniform has never been an issue. We ask parents to ensure that this continues. We are also seeking your assistance in ensuring that your child does not bring the following to school: mobile phone, digital camera, digital media players, glass bottles, fizzy drinks, chewing gum, and crisps. We encourage children to bring healthy lunches and parents are very good in this regard.
If you have any queries on school related matters do not hesitate to make an appointment to see the class teacher or myself.
Parents’ Association A.G.M. The Parents’ Association AGM is on Tuesday 7th October at 8.00p.m. in the school. We are very indebted to our very active and supportive Parents’ Association and I would encourage everyone to attend the AGM.
Again my sincere thanks for your help and co-operation.
I look forward to meeting you in the near future, and we all look forward to a great school year.
Kind Regards,
