22nd   January 2015

Dear  Parents,

I would like to wish  everybody a happy and healthy New Year.   Welcome to a new term.  Here is a reminder of some upcoming events.

Míle Buíochas: Thanks to the Parents’ Association and all the parents who volunteered and  helped  with all the fundraising  before Christmas.  Your time and work are really appreciated.

Fence:Over Christmas the Fence on the Eastern boundary was redone.  The old fence was taken away, broken poles replaced and all poles were extended with steel and caps. New heavy grade high tension wire replaced the old wire.  The fence is now very safe.  The gate to the western boundary was also extended.. The almost all weather pitch is now open and the barriers have been returned to Leane’s Tool Hire.  This grass now needs to be cut every two weeks  – mid March to September.  We need a lawnmower.  If anyone has a working lawnmower they do not need, the school would be delighted to get it.   We are very grateful to Mike Lucey for all the time and energy he put in to this project.

Safety: The Board of Management  is appealing to everyone to take great care pulling in, and leaving the school.  It is very dangerous for small children walking on the footpath.  Another child had a narrow escape before Christmas. This is a very serious safety concern.

Confirmation: The Confirmation Ceremony will take place on Friday 20th March at 11.00a.m. in St. Mary’s Cathedral. School will close at noon on that day.

A special mass for Confirmation Children and their parents will be held on Saturday 31st January 2015 at 6.15p.m.

There will be practices in the Cathedral from 11.30a.m. to 1.00p.m. on Tuesday 3rd February, Thursday 5th March and Thursday 12th March. Help with transport to these practices would be greatly appreciated.

Service of Light: The Service of Light for Confirmation will take place in the school on Monday 2nd March at 7.30p.m. If some of the fifth class are available to help with the choir for the Service of Light we would be delighted.

S.P.H.E. Social, Personal and Health Education: Joan Barrett, Life and Parent Coach, will speak to the parents of 5th and 6th class on Tuesday 24th  March at 8.00p.m. in the school with regard to the changes which take place for them during Puberty. Joan will then speak to the pupils in 5th and 6th class on Friday 27th March.  5th and 6th class will be getting a more detailed note regarding same.

Clothing Collection: We are having a new and used clothing collection on Friday 13th February.  The school will receive €5.50 for each 10kg bag of clothes.  Please leave any bags in the assembly hall.

Swimming: Swimming classes will commence next Thursday for 5th and 6th class.  A swimming note has been given out to 3rd 4th 5th and 6th classes giving details of dates costs etc. Please ensure that your child has his/her swim gear on those dates.  We are also looking for parents, both male and female to help with supervision in the changing room each day.

Credit Union Quiz: The annual Credit Union quiz will be held on February 1st.  The pupils on the teams have already got a note about the quiz.  Please remember to wear full school uniform on the day.

School Contribution:  Just a gentle reminder to those who have yet to pay the school contribution and to those who have to pay the second half of it.  We would be most grateful for payment. Thank you to those who have paid already.

Debate:  Our debating team were victorious again in Round two defeating Spa N.S. Tralee on January 12th . We have now advanced to the county semi-final of the Primary Debating Competition. Loreto will be debating against Ardfert  N.S. on Monday 26th January.  We are proposing the motion “that nobody should have to pay for water”. Go n-eirí linn.

Grandparents Day: We are celebrating Grandparents Day with Junior and Senior Infants and their grandparents on Monday 2nd February.

Chinese New Year: On Friday February 6th we are celebrating Chinese New Year as part of our Global Citizenship Green School Programme.

Yours sincerely
