The Active School Flag (ASF) is awarded to schools that strive to achieve a physically educated and physically active school community. The process aims to get more schools, more active, more often.

Our Active School’s committee is working hard putting together new activities and initiatives so we can become an active school!!

Physical Education

Scoil Bhríde, Loreto National School is placing huge emphasis on physical activity in school and at home.  All classes receive 60 minutes of formal PE lessons each week.  All classes are taught the strands of Athletics, Dance, Gymnastics, Games and Outdoor & Adventure each year.  Pupils from 3rd-6th class also take part in Aquatics, having swimming lessons each year in the Aquilla Club in Killarney.

Scoil Bhríde, Loreto National School is currently reviewing its Physical Educational Policy and is aiming to use the Move well, Move Often programme to teach fundamental movement skills in our school.

Physical Activity

Physical activity is important not only during P.E. class but throughout the school day.  Here at Loreto National School, we have a number of initiatives in place to ensure we are active for as long as possible throughout the day.

Break times

We have two breaks throughout the day where we are encouraged to go outside and play.  Our yard is zoned into separate areas according to class groupings. We have a running track which is used all year around and great for warming up on those cold winter days!! We also have a huge playing field which is great during the summer as we can play lots of different games!!

Playground Leaders

A number of volunteers from 2nd to 6th class act as playground leaders. They lead the boys and girls in Junior and Senior Infants  with different activities to do in the yard at lunchtime every Tuesday and Thursday. This has proven to be very popular with our younger students  and our wonderful volunteers engage in different activities each week.

Active Breaks

Along with taking Active Breaks using the running track in the school during the day, pupils also engage in other activity breaks during the day. A number of different exercises and activities are used in the classroom. We are taking part in the active break challenge which runs from November 9th to December 4th. Every class make sure not to miss out on their breaks everyday.

Active Calendar Events

Our school engages in a number of Active calendar events throughout the year. Examples include the Active break challenge in November/December , Run a day challenge in April where every class have to run to make it around Ireland and around Europe!! and a Active school’s week in June!!
