Dear Parents,

Thank you to all the families who supported “Guess the Score” Fundraiser.  A total of €1140 was collected for the school.  There was no winner.

Congratulations: Congratulations and well done to our past pupil Cian Gammell on his fantastic performance in the All Ireland Minor Football Final.

Recycling: Lenrec  Recycling  are having a new and used clothing collection in the school on  tomorrow Thursday 28th September.  Items collected include new and used men’s women’s and children’s clothing, shoes, belts, handbags, ties, linens, household textiles etc. Please place goods for recycling in a black bag and leave in the school assembly hall.

Beginning of Year Mass: Beginning of Year Mass will be celebrated by Fr. Kieran O’Brien on Friday 29th September at 9.30a.m.  Please note new time.  All are very welcome.

Climb of Torc:  The climb of Torc Mountain for 4th, 5th and 6th classes is still on the agenda.  We are waiting for a suitable day weather-wise.

The Quaid Gallery: Photographers will be visiting our school on Tuesday 17th October to take school photographs.  Please ensure that children are in full school uniform.  The photographs will be on sale later.  If you do not want your child photographed please let the school know in writing.

23rd October 2017: School will be closed on Monday 23rd October to facilitate an in-service training day for staff.

Book Fair:  With the help of the Parents’ Association we are having a Book Fair in the school from 15th November to the 22nd  November.  During this time books will be displayed and pupils given an opportunity to browse and choose some books.  The Parents’ Association will sell these books  to parents on Friday 17th , Monday 20th , and Tuesday 21st November from 2p.m  to 3p.m. If older classes want to choose and buy the books themselves they can bring in the money. If any books are sold out they can be ordered and delivery is 48 hours approx. The Book Fair is also very beneficial to the school as we can choose books for the school library to the value of 60% of sales.

School  Reminder: Thank you to all the parents who have paid their annual school bill and a gentle reminder to those who have not yet paid. In these tough times we are aware that any contribution may be difficult for some families.  Please let me know in the strictest confidence if paying is a problem.

The above bill includes Standardised Tests, Book Rental, Pupil Personal Accident Insurance 24 hour cover, Art/Craft materials and Photocopying.

Pupil Personal Accident Insurance:  The cost of this is included in the school bill. Unfortunately pupils who have not paid the contribution will not be included in the Personal Accident Insurance.

Local History Trail: 5th and 6th class went on a short local history tour incorporating the old Loreto Convent on Thursday 21st September.

In Class Support: In this school we operate a team teaching approach.  This means that from time to time another teacher including the Special Education Teachers(S.E.Ts) will come into the classroom and work with  the class teacher. We are aiming to provide In Class Support in this way in all classes this year.

Confirmation: Confirmation Day is Friday 9th March in St. Mary’s Cathedral at 3p.m.   School will close at 12 noon on that day.

First Holy Communion: First Holy Communion will be celebrated on Saturday 12th May at 10.30a.m. in the Church of the Holy Spirit, Muckross.

The Student Council: The Student Council is up and running again this year.  The Student Council will meet with myself and Ms O’Reilly Deputy Principal once a month.  The  Student Council will be the voice of the students and will help to run the school.  The following are the members for this year: Stephen Walsh, Clodagh Doolan, Clodagh Lucey, Ellen McSweeney, Jessica Fuller, Meabh O’Sullivan Darcy, Ali O’Donoghue, Craig Leggate, Zhuoyi Chen, Sarah Cooper, David O’Brien Mac Sweeney, Ella Barrett, Dara O’Sullivan, Grace Browne Murphy, Luke Doolan, Molly Reidy, Jenny Lucey, Laura Healy, Grace O’Shea, Jessica O’Connor and Paddy Moore.

Aistear:  Aistear is a new curriculum framework for children from birth to six years in Ireland and is being introduced in Loreto.  This Early Childhood Curriculum Framework celebrates early childhood as a time of being, and of enjoying and learning from experiences as they unfold. This early learning also lays important foundations for later learning, because early childhood marks the beginning of children’s lifelong learning journeys. Team Hope Christmas Shoe Box Appeal: We will be participating in the Team Hope Christmas Shoebox Appeal again this year.  A leaflet with details of same will be distributed to pupils over the next few weeks.

Monsignor Hugh O’Flaherty Award: The Monsignor Hugh O’Flaherty Award will be presented on Saturday 4th November.  The recipient of the award this year is Sr.  Orla Treacy from Co Wicklow –  a Loreto sister  and Principal of   the Girls school in Rumbek, South Sudan. Coincidentally, every year we donate the proceeds of our Easter Raffle to this school – our sister school in Rumbek.  We will do so again this year, and the Board of Management have agreed to donate the money in advance of the Easter Raffle (rather than have another fundraiser) .

Garda Vetting:  Garda Vetting of volunteers, parents etc is now coming under a new system which is partly processed on line and partly processed via an application form.   Application forms are available in the school office.  We appeal to parents to become vetted if they are helping with transport, or assisting the school.

Dear Parents,

We are delighted to have lots of good news to report.

 Update on Staffing: We were successful in our appeal to retain our fifth class teacher. Ms. Michelle O’Brien will remain teaching in this school for the academic year 2016/2017.

Reading Eggs: We have decided to use some of the money raised by the Guess the Score Raffle to purchase the Reading Eggs Programme for all the children in the school for this year. Reading Eggs is an online programme designed to improve your child’s reading skills.  Your child can access Reading Eggs and Reading Eggspress at home where parents can view their progress on line.  Each pupil will be given a Login Name and Password to access the programme. If pupils benefit from this programme we will consider adding the cost (approx €7 per child) to the school bill in the future.

 Cumann na mBunscoil Football:  Congratulations to our football team who have reached  the county semi-final of the Cumann na mBuncsoil Football Competition and will play Ahatubrid N.S. on this Wednesday at 1p.m. in Killorglin.  We will be leaving school at 12 noon sharp to travel to Killorglin.  We would appreciate help with lifts.  We wish the very best of luck to our team.  Go n-éirí leo.

I.T update: We are in the process of updating our computer room to have fourteen working computers with headphones.  These will be very useful for the Reading Eggs Programme.  We are also purchasing six iPads and hope to have wireless internet.

Hallow  E’en  Dress up:  All  classes  are invited to dress up in their Hallow E’en costumes on Friday 28th  October and bring in €2.  Money raised will be divided between Temple Street Hospital and Brú Columbanus – a small independent charity that provides” home from home “ accommodation for the relatives of sick children in Cork Hospitals and Hospice.   Many thanks to Trish Quigley from the 223 Club who is organising this collection. Please ensure all children are warm enough in their costumes for break times and that they can move safely.   No implements or sharp  objects are allowed for safety reasons.

Christmas Shoe Box Appeal. Team Hope: This year we will again be participating in Team Hope Shoe box appeal. The school are waiting to receive the flyers to hand out to pupils giving all the information regarding the Shoe Box Appeal.  As soon as they are delivered to the school we will distribute them.                                                                                                                                                                                                     The organisers have asked us to mention that it is not suitable to include chocolate in the boxes.  The boxes will be collected from the school on 11th November.

Christmas Cards: The school is organising the Christmas Card fundraiser for the school again this year.  Each child will design their own personal Christmas Card and receive a sample card to show at home before there is any obligation to buy.  If you are interested in finding out more please check on www.christmas cardsforschools.ie.  Please don’t buy your Christmas cards until you see your child’s masterpiece.

Parent Teacher Meetings: Parent Teacher meetings will take place on Friday 11th November beginning at 3.00p.m. Children will go home at 2.30p.m. If children in Junior and Senior Infants are being collected at 1.50p.m. older siblings can also go at this time. The school cannot accept responsibility for children on the school premises during the meetings. Please make an arrangement to have your children looked after.

Mid Term Break: School will close at normal school times (1.50p.m. and 2.50p.m.) this Friday 28th October for midterm break and will re-open on Monday 7th November.

Date for your diary: Whole school Christmas Celebration will take place Friday 16th December at 11.30a.m. All are welcome

Farewell to our Friend

 

Retirement of Mrs. Mary Moynihan Deputy Principal of Scoil Bhride, Loreto.

A large crowd gathered in Scoil Bhríde, Loreto on Friday 24th June to pay tribute to  Mrs. Mary Moynihan who is retiring this year after thirty eight years of dedicated service to the school and to bid her a fond farewell.

Mass involving the whole school, was celebrated by Fr. Kieran O’Brien Chairperson of the Board of Management. Presentations were made from the Board of Management, Parents’ Association, past pupils and the children.

A tree was planted in the school grounds to remind the children of Mrs. Moynihan every day.  After tributes to Mrs. Moynihan in prose verse and song Mrs. O’Sullivan thanked every child, past pupil, every parent and Board of Management member who helped to organise the celebration

Mrs. Moynihan started school in Loreto at four years of age.  She progressed through Loreto Secondary School and on to Carysfort College.

Mrs. Moynihan began her teaching career in 1978.  She embraced all new advances in technology, moving with ease from the blackboard and chalk of 1978 to the interactive whiteboard today.

At the same time she encouraged the children to keep up the traditional skills of knitting and gardening and to appreciate the beauty of nature and the local history of Killarney. She continuously upskilled herself but always remained unassuming, approachable and willing to share her expertise.

Mrs. Moynihan is a true team player who was always loyal to Loreto. As Deputy Principal since 1998 Mrs. Moynihan was greatly involved with all developments in the school including the new building extension.  She was always available with her warmth, her wisdom and her wealth of experience. This was greatly appreciated.

Mrs. Moynihan is a gifted teacher and a true professional who brought out the best in every child. She has been a wise, kind and supportive friend to the whole school community. She has a wealth of knowledge of local history and a love of nature which she shared generously with the children.  They will always remember her love for them and her kindness towards them.

We thank Mrs. Moynihan for her kindness and friendship and thirty eight years of hard work and dedication to the children and the school.

We are sad that Mrs. Moynihan is leaving Loreto. We will miss her presence in school everyday, her sense of fun, her empathy, her friendship and kindness, her wisdom and experience, her laughter and common sense.

We wish Mrs. Moynihan every health, happiness and fulfilment as she enters a new stage in her life.  We hope she enjoys many new adventures as well as taking a well deserved rest, no longer having to watch the clock.

I hope you and your family are well.  We are having a very busy final term.  Here is a reminder of some upcoming events:Dear  Parents,

Our Deputy Principal Mrs. Mary Moynihan is retiring after thirty eight years of service in our school.  The Board of Management and school are very grateful to Mary for her long years of service and dedication to the school and wish her every health and happiness for the future.

End of Year school Mass: The mass to celebrate the retirement of Mrs. Moynihan and 6th class graduation will be on Friday 24th June at 11.30a.m. Presentations will be made and photographs taken afterwards.  All parents, former parents and past pupils are most welcome.  Spread the word please.

Recycling: We are recycling a number of 21inch  TV’s/ video combi.  If anybody is interested in them they are here in the school for collection.

“Patrick”:  4th 5th and 6th classes  attended  the 1916 musical drama “Patrick” written and directed by Rathmore journalist and writer, Aidan O’Connor in the I.NE.C on Thursday 26th May.

Corpus Christi Procession:  The annual Corpus Christi Procession took place on Thursday 26th May after 6.15p.m. Mass. Our First Holy Communion class and pupils throughout the school took part.

 May Prayer Service: The School Prayer Service for May took place on Friday 27th May.

Senior School Sports Day: We availed of the fine weather on the 2nd June to have our senior sports day.

County Final of the Primary Schools Athletics :   The County Finals of the Primary Schools’ Athletics were held in   an Ríocht Track on Saturday 4th June. We had many pupils representing the school in the various races and we also had a 3rd and 4th class girls’ relay team.  Well done to all.

The Annual Gap Trip: The annual 6th class visit to St. Francis Special School, St. Mary of the Angels Beaufort  and Gap Trip took place on Thursday 9th June.

Junior Sports Day:  The Juniors classes are eagerly awaiting their Sports Day which will take place on June 21st.

Junior School Tour:  The Junior school Tour took place on Thursday 19th May .

 Senior School Tour: The senior school tour will take place on Tuesday 21st June.

Open Day for our new Junior Infants:  We had a very successful Open Day for our new Junior Infants in the school on 16th June.  Thanks to the Parents’ Association for providing teas.  We are also having an open day for future pupils and parents to view the school on 22nd June between 2p.m.  and 3 p.m.

Garda Blitz:  We participated in the Garda Football Blitz on Thursday 16th June in Fitzgerald’s Football Stadium.

Book Rental Scheme:  The Book rental Scheme is still ongoing in the school .This will result in a major reduction in book bills and savings for parents.                Please ensure all rented books are returned in good condition to the school.

Board of Management Report

Appeal: We were successful in our appeal to retain a 5th teacher.  A teacher has been appointed provisionally – subject to having 123 pupils on roll on September 30th 2016.

Sympathies : We would like to extend sympathies to the families of Fr. Pat Horgan (former School Chaplain) and Sr. Pauline Boyle  and Sr. Margaret Doherty ( former chairpersons of the Board of Management).  May they rest in peace. There will be Mass for Sr. Pauline and Sr. Margaret on Tuesday 28th June at 7.30p.m. in Muckross Church.

Many thanks to the Parents’ Association for their hard work throughout the year.

 Fundraising:   Street collection, Christmas Raffle, Coffee Morning, Book Fair and Cake sale.

Organising Teas/coffees after Christmas Celebrations, Open Day and Graduation Mass.

Deputy Principal: the position of Deputy Principal was advertised. The interview Board recommended the appointment of Ms. Evelyn O’Reilly

School Closure: school will be closed on Wednesday 22nd June to facilitate an Inservice Training Day on the New Language Curriculum.

A big thank you to the members of the B.O.M. who help to run our school and to the parents who help to maintain it and cut the grass.

6th Class: Best wishes to 6th class as they go on to secondary school.

Summer Holidays: The school will close at 12 noon on Wednesday 29th June for school holidays and will reopen on 1st September.

 School Magazine: Our annual School Magazine will be on sale shortly for €5.00.  You can secure your copy by dropping €5 into the school office.
